Mother's Day Hike!
Heart Mountain Scramble
IF YOU DIDN'T KNOW (I hope you did), Mother's Day was yesterday! I had to fly, unfortunately, but since my mom's a bad*ss, we went for a hike on Saturday to celebrate. It was my mom, my stepdad, my sister and myself, and we went to do the Heart Mountain scramble. I found this quite apropos, as we've done it a couple times together, and it was with people close to my heart.
I haven't talked much about my family here, but they are awesome. My parents are divorced, but I still spend time with both "sets" of parents. I owe my love of the mountains to my mom, my love of camping to both of them, and my general forays into cross-country skiing and biking to my dad. When my sister and I were kids, we would go camping every summer at Kikomun Creek in BC. It is a beautiful spot, and I actually returned there a couple years ago with my sister and my friend, Kendal. So, growing up, we did quite a bit. I stopped hiking a lot during high school, but I've rediscovered my love for it and made a conscious effort to learn more and get out more since becoming an adult. And thankfully, my parents still want to hang out and do fun things with me! (That's supposed to be the other way around, right?)
So Saturday, mom decided she wanted to do the Heart Mountain scramble. A lot of people have been to Heart Creek as it's a quick and easy, but beautiful hike. There's also great climbing there. The scramble is a ton of fun and takes approximately 3-5 hours to do the full loop. We decided just to get up to the 'heart' instead of the true summit for the sake of time (and my stepdad's knees and sister's blisters!).
Here's a couple of us on our way up. There was a nice guy from Edmonton that took a photo of the four of us. Then he sprinted away.
We all love making it a little more challenging, and climbing up the rocks. It was a blast. We sat up at the top and had our lunch before heading back down.
And a couple of us at the top. Aren't my mom and sister cute?! I also finally managed to do a headstand at the top of a mountain. Woohoo!
My mom, stepdad and Jocelyn were staying at a hotel in Banff Saturday night, so once we got down we all drove out there. I hung out for a little bit and then drove home. It's too bad I couldn't stay the night, but I'm so happy we all got out! It was a lovely day, and we all got a little sun!
Did anyone do anything incredible for Mother's Day? What quality did you inherit from your mom? I'd love to know! Comment below.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading. It means a lot. I hope you have a great week! Arrivederci!
